Five Iron Frenzy Concert Review

by Jaycee Saugstad

If you are anything like me, you are always looking to discover cool Christian bands. Well, today I get to introduce you to Five Iron Frenzy. You may have heard of them before, if not ask your parents they probably have. Five Iron Frenzy is a Christian ska punk/alternative band from Colorado. They were pretty popular in the Christian alternative and ska scene in the 90s, and are still very popular in the ska scene today! Thirty years later, they are still making music and playing shows.

I had the opportunity to see Five Iron Frenzy live at the Observatory in Santa Ana last August. The band came out full of energy and opened their set with “The Old West” which is the opening track on their first album. They played what they called their old school set which was made up of songs mostly from their first few albums and EPs. I personally loved it because that is my favorite era of Five Iron Frenzy.

Their set was full of energy and the band’s stage presence was so fun! The singer jumped off the ledge of the stage so many times, and the band had some great dance moves. At one point they made jokes and threw tortillas at the audience which was very memorable. I think about that every time I see a tortilla now.

For the music nerds out there, one thing I found interesting is that the band had no amps or monitors on stage. The guitar and bass were plugged into the PA system and the whole band had in-ear monitors as well. I know a lot of bigger productions do this but as someone who primarily goes to smaller shows, you don’t typically see this and I thought it was cool!

The opening bands, Craig’s Brother and The Ruffolos, were both amazing as well! They definitely brought the energy and got the audience hyped up.

In my opinion, there is nothing more fun than a good ska show. A Five Iron Frenzy show is extra fun because not only is it upbeat energetic music, but they have good lyrics and that turn you towards The Lord! They are also amazing musicians that put on an excellent show. Five Iron Frenzy is one of my favorite Christian bands and next time they come to Southern California, if you have the chance to see them I highly recommend you do! I’m absolutely positive you will have fun and make memories that will last!
