The Importance of Skincare Before Makeup

by Alyssa Lopez

Throughout the day, does your makeup start to look dry or cakey? Perhaps it doesn’t last that long? This might be because you aren’t doing your skincare before your makeup. Doing your skincare before you do your makeup will help with a smoother application for your makeup and it will help it last longer. A proper base will help makeup stay in place all day and keep it from getting that dry or cakey texture. Makeup can also irritate your skin, so doing skincare will keep it from getting irritated when it directly touches your face. This will help your skin from getting clogged pores and skin irritation. So to prevent all of these things from ruining your makeup, this is what a skin prep routine looks like for a flawless makeup application and long wear.

First, start by washing your face so you can have a clean base for your makeup. Doing this will help remove dirt and oil that would clog your pores. Next, use a serum that fits your skin type — if you have dry or dull skin use something that will give you glow and hydration. After this, use a moisturizer, that again, fits your skin type. An example for this would be that if you are someone with oily skin, use a light weight moisturizer. But if you are someone with dry skin, use a heavy and creamy moisturizer. Moisturizer is going to help keep our skin looking soft so that your makeup stays looking fresh throughout the day. Next, I definitely recommend using sunscreen before starting your makeup. This will help protect your skin from sun damage and wrinkles that the sun can give you. Lastly, this step is optional but you can use a primer as a final barrier to help grip your makeup. There are also different types of primers with blurring effects to improve the appearance of your skin to make it look smoother. After these steps you are able to start your makeup routine for a perfect base and long-lasting fresh-looking makeup.
